Several months ago someone contacted me re a Lawrence Barringer. At that
time I thought that I knew all of the names for the children of my
g,g,grandparents George Barringer and Mary Shallenberger. I confirmed today
via a Death Certificate that I was wrong so I am looking for any Barringer
who might fit in with the family below: Also, I am finding that I should not
confine my search to just Fayette and Washington counties in PA. There
could be members of this family living in Westmoreland and Allegheny
counties as well:
George Barringer b. 1797, Bedford Co.; d. 1867; buried Section C.
Monongahela Cemetery, Monongahela,Washington Co., PA. married Mary
Shallenberger b. 1793, Westmoreland Co., PA; d. 1881; buried Section C.
Monongahela Cemetery, Monongahela, PA.
The following are the children known so far:
Catherine b. 1823*
George** b. 1830,most likely Houston Run, PA d. 1908, Licking Co, Ohio;; m.
Margaret Jane (Loughman), Rose. Pension papers stated that they had a
grandson by the name of Perry R. Barringer living in Licking Co., Ohio.
John** b. 1834, Houston Run, PA; d. 1908, m. Fanny Roberts; both are buried
in Section C. Monongahela Cemetery, Monongahela, Washington Co., Pa.
Joseph b. 1836; nothing more is known
William** b. 1838 Houston Run, PA; d.1906,Monongahela, PA; m. # 1 Mary Ann
Rose d. 1879; m. # 2 Ida May Landis b. 1866, Worthington, PA; d. 1948,
Akron, Ohio (my line) William is buried in the Civil War section of the Mon
City Cem.; while wife # 1, Mary Ann Rose is buried in Section C. with the
rest of the Barringer family.
Mariah Jane b. 1843*
Note: * I am not sure of the relationship of Catherine and Mariah Jane.
Either Mary (Shallenberger) Barringer bore children from 1823 to 1843 or
Mariah Jane may have been a granddaughter. Except for George b. 1830, the
above were all listed in the 1850, Cookstown (now Fayette City) Fayette Co.,
Census. I have not as yet be able to get the section which would have given
the relationship of Catherine and Mariah Jane.
Note ** William joined Co. D. 79th PA Cavalry on Sept. 7, 1861. Brother
John joined Co. D. 79th Infantry on Sept 7, 1861 and brother, George joined
Co. 79th Infantry on Sept. 9, 1861. The big question is where did Joseph
join?
I think that there may have been additional children of George and Mary who
were older and on their own when the 1850 Census was taken. Also, George
Barringer the elder had ties to Maryland. He served as George Bearinger in
the Maryland Militia during the War of 1812.
If anyone on the Barringer list has an ancestor born in Houston Run, PA or
has ties to Fayette, Westmoreland, Allegheny, or Washington counties, please
contact me. There seems to have been a concentration of Barringers around
Monongahela (Mon City) PA.
Thank you for your help.
