Subject: [BARRINGER] Barringer-Shallinberger/Shallenberger mystery solved
Date: Sat, 8 Jul 2000 21:49:31 -0500

For a long time I have been trying to find the family connection re an Uncle
Shallinberger or Shellenberger that my late father would mention. According
to the story, this man went to California for the gold rush. His story was
later told on the radio show, Death Valley Days."

Process of elimination made me feel that this was a Barringer family
connection. My g,grandfather William Barringer's Death Certificate only
gave his parents as George Barringer and mother as Mary.

Thank God for the great records at the Mon City, Pa. Cemetery. I found
William's brother John had died in 1908 so I could get a DC for John.
Today, I learned that their mother's name was Mary Shallinberger or
Shallenberger. (I'm not sure of the handwriting)

For the purpose of finding Barringer and Shallinberger cousins, here are the
children of George Barringer b. Aug. 16, 1797, Bedford Co., Pa; d. Sept. 16,
1867, Mon City, Pa. served War 1812, & 79th PA, Civil War; m. Mary
Shallinberger b. 1793, Westmoreland Co., PA; d.June 15, 1881, Mon City:

Some of the following is from the 1850 Census for Cookstown (Fayette City),
Fayette Co., PA,

Catherine Barringer b. 1823 She may have been a sister(1850 Census)

John Barringer b. Dec. 17, 1834, PA; d. July 1, 1908, (served 79th PA) m.
Fannie ? b. 1838; d. Dec. 29, 1921.

Joseph Barringer b. 1836 (1850 Census)

William Barringer b. Dec. 11, 1838, Houston Run, PA.; d.Dec. 16, 1906, Mon
City, PA.(served 79th PA and Mississippi Marine Brigade) m. #1 Mary Ann
Rose; #2 Ida May Landis b. 1866, Worthington, PA.; d. 1948, Akron, Ohio

Mariah Jane Barringer b. 1843 (1850 Census) She could have been the daughter
of Catherine above. This is another mystery to solve.

The first wife of William Barringer died in 1879 leaving a 9 year old son by
the name of John W. Barringer born Oct. 24, 1870. I know that he grew to
adulthood as I have C.W. pension records with his signature where he was
helping my g,grandmother Ida May (Landis) Barringer get her widow's pension.

Hopefully, someone reading this will contact me with additional info on the
above family.

Thank you,

Marilyn, Lake Co., IL
