Subject: [BARRINGER] the Peter --possilbly John Paul line
Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 17:37:14 -0400
Hey all.
Since there is some interest in the John Paul line and the Peter -
Nicholas Charles (which is somehow connected with John Paul), I will
type in the rest of the info i have on this. There is so, so much more,
most real estate and marriage records, at the Salisbury Public Library
which i haven't been able to put together yet but hope to someday.
Ira Dayvault of Concord who is also related to Barringers has put
together a booklet, and I'll give you his address if you'd like to
order. He refers to a book called "The Natural Bent" which is at the
reference section in Salisbury.
Below is info I took from Ira's book and info provided by my
grandfather, Samuel Alexander Barringer. I will type in more later. I
just found court records on Nicholas's will and children also.
Here's what I have on Nicholas and Charles, two of my ancestors.
"Peter Behringer arrived in Pennsylvania aboard the St. Andrew, Sept.
14, 1751. Also aboard this same shi was a German named 'P. Ludwig Dewalt
(P. Lewis Dayvault). Three years later, Oct. 1, 1754, another Peter
Behringer arrived from Germany aboard the Phoenix. It is believed that
the first was Peter Behringer who settled in Rowan County and the other
was his wife [Margaret] whom he married before leaving Germany and
obtained the word of her father that he would send her to meet him as
soon as he obtained a place for her to live. According to the Diary of
the late Governor Dobbs, who recorded the names of all the German
families in Rowan County, residing on Cold Water Creek prior to the
Revolutionary war, Peter's Frau was named 'Margaret' . Peter Behringer
was clearly too old to have been the son of John Paul Behringer Esq.
Brother or cousin? possibly..."
According to my grandfather, Samuel Alexander Barringer (son of John
Redwine), Peter Behringer had a brother Matthias Behringer at Lower
Stone Church, wherever that is.
John Paul Behringer also had a younger brother named Matthias.
Since there seems to be a missing sibling in the other story I posted
from the Reunion in 1934, I wonder if Peter is that sibling. Maybe he
was the black sheep of the family, and noone wanted to claim him.
But the fact is that Peter Behringer had a land grant that adjoined the
land grant of John Paul Behringer. This to me indicates a close
relationship of some kind.
It appears that Peter had at least two sons. One was Nicholas and the
other Peter Jr.
Peter Jr's will leaves land to his wife and minor children, a plantation
to his son, Paul and other land is to be sold and divided among his
children, "namely: Paul, Jeremiah, David;; peter Lawrence & daughters,
Polly, Caty, Peggy, the eldest, w/o Paul Clutz (Kluttz) and the smaller
ones, Anna and Sophia."
Nicholas, the son of Peter Sr. is the father of Charles who is the
father of Joseph A, who is the father of John Redwine, my great
grandfather.
Also to clear up a statement I made earlier. When Barnhardt was listing
John Paul's siblings, referring to 5 instead of 6 children of JP's
parents, he was excluding John Paul. All other sources agree that JP had
2 brothers and 3 sisters, so I'm still puzzled as to where my ancestor
Peter,Sr. (father of Nicholas) comes into the picture. Knowing that his
land grant was next to John Paul's does make it seem like a relationship
is likely. My living relatives all claim that we are related to John
Paul, I just haven't found the exact connection.
