Have some new BARNINGER information that I want to share with anyone
researching the name in PA. My BARNINGERs are from the Columbia/Luzerne
Co. area and I've been trying to figure out how they came to be there,
and if they're related to the NY or NC BARRINGERS. At the same time, I've
been researching other names (BURNS, FERRY, WERTS) in the Berks Co. area
and have seen the BERINGER name many times there and wondered if there
would ultimately be a connection to my Luzerne Co. BARNINGERS. Turns out
there is.
In the "History of Columbia and Montour Counties" there is a bio of
Edna BERNINGER, b. 1881 in Northumberland Co., d/o Israel and Barbara
Ellen (Long) BERNINGER. In it she states that her gg-grandfather was
Nicholas BERNINGER, born in Saxony, Germany, married there and emigrated
to America, settling in Longswamp Township, Berks Co., PA, where he died.
She goes on to say that his son was Philip BERNINGER, born in Berks
Co., PA, who moved in 1812 to Roaringcreek Valley, Columbia Co., PA. He
married Salome YOST, and their children were: Philip, Jacob, Henry,
Jonas, Elizabeth and Mary.
Her grandfather was Jonas BERNINGER, born 1800, Berks Co., PA, who
married Ida Dorcas YOST, and had two children: Angeline and Israel.
Israel was born 1836, at Slabtown, Northumberland Co., PA, married
Barbara Ellen LONG, and had nine children, maybe more. (unfortunately, I
did not copy the additional page with more names on it)
I don't know if other BERNINGERS came to the Columbia Co. area with
Philip BERNINGER. I'm looking seriously at his son Jacob BERNINGER as the
father of my gg-grandmother Caroline BARNINGER, who was born in Luzerne
Co. in 1825, married Samuel Lewis WERTS there in 1843, had six children,
and died in Franklin Co., OH.
Strassberger's immigrant lists show a Nicholas BERNINGER arriving in
Philadelphia on the ship Neptune in 1753, and a Philip BERINGER arriving
on the same ship in 1754. That same year a Bartholomew BERINGER came on
the ship Phoenix.
Hope this new information points some of you BARRINGER searchers in a
fruitful direction.
