Yes, it's for real. To date there are at least three known independent lines of Ayres/ers in the US. Two are what is called R1b, and one is E3b. These are "haplogroups," or broad genetic communities defined by particular mutations on the y chromosome. My ancestor is one of the R1b's. The history of the E3b's is fairly well worked out.
Your line may, or may not, be one of these. If not, all to the good, then there are at four Ayres lines in the US. To link up, you need a male Ayres relative to provide a sample. This is quite safe and essentially anonymous. The labs test only for some markers on the y chromosome that are broadly useful genealogically.
