The book under discussion here (_Some Descendants of Stephen Lincoln_), which incidentally is also part of the HeritageQuest collection and thus available for download in PDF format to anyone with HQ access, has this to say about its fewer than a dozen pages on the Ayer family.

"The following Genealogy of the Ayer family was copied in 1924 by professor William Carey Poland from papers belonging to the family of Joseph Warren Ayer; the data attributed to "Five Colonial Families" by Tremain & Poole, Ithaca, 1902." (page 287)

If one is interested in the most current Ayer information or in primary sources, this might not be the best buy.
