I can't tell you how thrilled I am with all of the help you both have given me! This is a lot of really great information.
I visited my father this past weekend for more info on his grandfather Vasil Beley. I'm attaching the marriage record he had for them. It is a Roman Catholic church. His surname is spelled Beli on this one. No one knows who the witnesses are.
My father told me that Vasil was afraid of the Bolsheviks because they killed his brother, and he fled to Austria and then to the United States. I'm not sure how accurate this is - it may be a tale passed down and altered through time and word of mouth. We still don't know which area he originally came from.
Again, thanks so much for all your help. I knew almost nothing about central and eastern Europe. This is fascinating stuff!
