Dear Dave,
The only records, which I am positive about ( I called the archive today0,
that has restricted access, is the Militaermatriken. This covers fallen
soldiers 1914-1918.
However, I find this a bit odd, since I was researching these materials just
a couple of months ago with no problem.
If you say "since 1904", this is all younger than 100 years, so if it is
personal data, it will probably be restricted.
To tell you the truth, there is an Archive in Vienna, one in Prague, one in
Trnava, and asking them on the same matter, you get contradictory answers.
To my great surprise, one archive does not know what the other has. If I
would have time, I would investigate the whole situation, but I am so busy,
that I can work only on a concrete case at a time and there I can see what
the situation is.
In a situation like this, I would simply advice to ask the archive a
concrete question ( regarding concrete person with data ) and they would
tell, whether one can have acces or not and whether they have any materials
or not.
I will slowly collect this type of info and let Karen know.
If you visit the archive, you need more than one day, since they need one or
two days to prepare the materials.
They have very strict regulations there. You are, for example not even
allowed to carry a pen. You can only write your notes with a pencil or with
a laptop.
There are also different sorts of restrictions. For example, there are
certain materials, where you can ask for info, but are not allowed to search
yourself, so you have to order the search.
I can tell you so much for now.
With best regards,
Vladimir
