Hi Mahree - as you have found out there is heaps
of research been done over the years on that
infamous part of Goldfields History
The book "The Home Fires" by Anthony Splivalo
tell the story of the first riot as a non English speaking
migrant child in Kalgoorlie and well worth reading.
There a few few elderly Goldfields residents who
helped hide and rescue the families on "Ding Bat Flats"
as there houses were burnt as the vigilante groups who
roamed Kalgoorlie and Boulder burning and smashing
everything "foreign" in their path. And there are a lot
of photographs available of that damage.
I also recommend you do a search at UWA of thesis
and research papers on this subject - over the years
every strand of these events have been subject of
research papers of some sort.
There never has been an official admission of deaths
but the oldtimers 20-30 years ago used to tell me about
the many people who were pushed down shafts and who
just vanished but it was all officially swept under the carpet !!!
in the name of calming the towns but it was desperate times.
I really hope you will do your film and can uncover material
to help you with your project.

> Hi all, I have always had an avid interest in WA history. Currently I am
engaged in a Film/TV course and we have some local filming assignments to
complete during the course of the year. Since few people in WA seem to be
aware of the two gold field riots (post WW1 and 1931) I would like to embark
on a project recording the history of those riots in Kalgoorlie. I don't
have much info on the first one but lots of info from the newspapers of the
day in the Battye Library plus transcripts of several oral histories stored
there (it is interesting to see how personal accounts varied from newspaper
reports). What I am seeking are people still living who were there ( mostly
likely as kids) or immediate family members/descendants willing to appear on
film and be interviewed about the family memories/history of those times. In
particular would be the family of Edward (Ted) Jordan whose death sparked
the 1931 riots in January, or those of Mattaboni ( the Italian barman who
defended him!
> self against Jordan and whose punch knocked Jordan to the road where his
thin-boned skull cracked against the kerbing). Many immigrant families fled
into the bush to hide during the upheaval that followed. It made
international headlines so much so that even Mussolini sent one hundred
pounds to aid the refugees flocking to Perth from Kalgoorlie! Many thanks if
anyone can help me locate people as mentioned above Mahree
