Hi Daryl,
Great to get your response. It gets more and more confusing, but there
definately are two people. They were first cousins. And although the
family
was positively teeming with doctors, there was no Dr Henry Byass in Aus.
Well,
if you prove me wrong I'll be delighted.
Dr Lovel Byass, born Arundel, Sussex 23/1/1812, son of John Byass,
surgeon, of
Arundel, who came to Australia in 1836 and settled at Portland with the
Henty's
whom he knew from Sussex. He is the chap from Merino Downs. He has
many
descendents in Australia and we are in contact with several of them. He
had
five children, although the first was born and died on Kangaroo Island
before
they reached Portland. His daughter Anna Maria Pecknell was the first
white
child born at Portland.
Henry Byass, born c.1826, baptised Cuckfield 18/6/1827, son of Lovel
Byass,
Surgeon of Cuckfield, Sussex. He is basically lost to family record,
but may
well be the Henry who was at Mt Sturgeon in 1844 (Dr Robert Martin's
run) and
Bendigo Creek in November 1851 (with his friends Frederick Fenton and
Stewart
Gibson, who had the Mt Alexander run). It was he who rode with the news
of the
gold discovery to Forest Creek (Castlemaine) which started the rush to
Bendigo.
He next *arrives* in Victoria in May 1856 on the ss Carntyne (after a
trip
home?). He had one arm, which is mentioned in a couple of sources.
We don't know who was at Arida (wherever and whatever that is), but if
we could
find some reference to it, we might have a lead on Henry - or know more
about Dr
Lovel.
I'd love to know what your sources are for the information you have is.
I'm
trying to find primary sources if at all possible, because some of the
published
stuff is clearly wrong.
My mum is Byass. We're descended from another of the Byasses who came
here -
Alfred, a nephew of Henry and Lovel
Thanks again for responding. Robyn
