I am researching my McCUNNIE family. John and his wife Margaret McAree were both born in Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland in c1833, and were married in a Catholic Church there in Strabane in c1856, had a daughter, Susan in c1857 and perhaps another daughter, Margaret, before they came to Victoria. The first record I have of them is when my grand-father, Charles McCunnie, was born at Mt. Fyans in July 1860, and little Margaret died, aged 2 in October, 1860 at Gledefield Station near Ararat. She was buried at Fitzgerald's Station also near Ararat. There is no record of her birth here in Australia, so I believe that she may either have been born in Ireland or on the ship, but have no proof of either event.

The family came to the Terang district in about the mid-1860's and John was buried in Terang in 1883. I have been unable to find any record of their passage out, or any records of their births, marriage or births of the children in Tyrone. They had 9 children in all, but my grandfather was the only one of them to have a family. He had 6 children and I am one of the youngest of 17 grandchildren, and as ours is the only family of McCunnies in Australia, we are a small clan.

I would be most grateful if anybody can suggest new ways of tracing the family in Nth. Ireland. I have tried all sorts of ideas, but as yet, have very little result, but will keep trying.

Thanks for allowing me to share my interest.

Aileen Pekin (nee McCunnie - Terang District)
