Just thought I would let you all know of my experience in obtaining
information from the records at the Guildhall in London.
Through their web site they have a facility where you can submit a query
and they will give you a quote for the cost of the research, which is done
by their own researchers.
I submitted a query on Friday 18th May requesting information about my Great
Grandfather, William Smith, who was admitted as a member of the Society of
Apothecaries in 1837. On Monday 21st May I received an e-mail back advising
that the information I required was kept in the Manuscript Section and was
FREE! They also enclosed a transcript of all the records they had on
William Smith.
Like.........wow!! It only took 3 days and over the week end too!!!
The URL for the Guildhall is: www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/search_guildhall
Their e-mail address is :
In their e-mail they also advised that further information including a guide
to holdings and details of access is available on the internet through the
Institute of Historical Research's History server: http://ihr.sas.ac.uk/gh/
