Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2003 07:33:10 +1100
Departed Portsmouth: 19th July 1818
Arrived Sydney Cove: 31st December 1818
Type: ship
Weight: 635
Master: Robert Granger
Surgeon Superintendent: Andrew Smith of Royal Navy
Convicts: 246 male convicts
Regiment: 84th Regiment – Captain Arthur A Bernard
George Panton with his wife and family were also on board.
The convicts on board were so harshly treated and underfed that Surgeon
Andrew Smith; Captain Arthur Bernard of the 84th Regiment and a soldier
Mathew Flynn all laid complaints against the Master when the ship landed.
Robert Granger is alternatively referred to as “Master”, “Captain” and
“Commander” and no doubt many other names by the convicts he so abused.
Having sailed for more than 5 hellish months, they arrived New Year’s
Eve with the convicts disembarked on January 13th and forwarded to
Parramatta, Windsor, Liverpool and Bringelly for distribution.
Together with 10 convicts from Ireland were my ggg grandfather and his
son James Nye Snr and James Nye Jnr. They had been part of the “Shipley
Gang” from Sussex - either highway robbers or modern day(19th century)
Robin Hood’s stealing from the rich to give to the poor.
Another link, but not a direct one, is my grandfather’s first wife’s
grandfather William Windley. The Nye’s married in 1826 (Nye Snr to die
the next year) and 1833, James Nye Jnr who settled in Sutton Forest,
married Ann McDonald/McDonnell from the Elizabeth II 1828 and reared an
extensive family. However William was another character all together.
His life is well recorded in the Nichols-Pugh stories.
After the hearing about Robert Granger’s conduct in March 1819, the
General Stewart/Stuart set sail for Batavia in April . I need to search
to discover the Captain's identity.
So many bits and pieces referring to convicts future life and to the
hearing, maybe it is another “book” which should be researched.
