Ken,
Wollombi, in 1903 formed part of the Federal Electorate of HUNTER, which
was first formed at Federation in 1901, taking in all of the State
electorates of Durham, East Maitland, West Maitland, Singleton,
Northumberland, and parts of both Robertson and Gloucester.
In 1901, there was no Federal election held at Wollombi, as there was
only the one unopposed candidate, Edmund Barton, who thus became the
original Prime Minister.
In September, 1903, Barton resigned to become one of three High Court
judges. No bye-election was held as the regular 1903 election was due to be
held a few months later in December.
At the Federal election, held at Wollombi, on December 16, 1903, Dr Frank
Liddell (former Mayor at Maitland) gained 83 Wollombi votes compared to just
16 shared between his two opponents - Messrs Waller and Rae. Liddell was
comfortably returned for the seat of Hunter.
I'm sorry I cannot state exactly where the Wollombi polling booth was
located that year at Wollombi, as our records for that period are away on
temporary loan. When they are returned the exact location can be provided,
if still needed.
Best wishes, Brian.
