>From a paper I have been asked to review come the following statements:

The Tasmanian parliament passed the Volunteer Act of 1858, and Masons led
the response. The first unit to be formed was the Hobart Town Volunteer
Artillery Company, in December 1859, under Augustus Frederick Smith of
Tasmanian Union Lodge and William Tarleton, a Police Magistrate. The next
unit to be formed, and the first of the rifle companies, in February 1860 was
the Hobart Town Masonic Volunteer Rifle Company (generally known as the
Masonic Rifles).

I ask the members of this list several questions:

Is there a published [or unpublished] history of the Militia
movement in Tasmania?
What is known of the Masonic militia units on the Northern half
of the island?
Where can I get an image of the uniforms of the Hobart Town
Masonic Volunteer Rifle Company, or similar?
