I have been reading the old newspapers in the Newspaper Archives available through the Baxter County Library. I would guess that all these articles were also published in some Izard County newspaper, but they are not available on the website. I thought I would share these with you and I will have more tidbits about Izard County that was published in other newspapers later on. - Janice

Calico Rock - Alex Flannery found a 27-grain pearl near Calico Rock recently. Flannery shot a fish, and after wading into the water to get it, decided to open a few mussel shells. He threw about a dozen shells from the river to the bank and in one of these he found the pearl.

The houses at Calico Rock which floated from their foundations during the high water are being replaced. They will be anchored with heavy concrete blocks placed six feet in the ground. The wagon bridge over Calico Creek has already been replaced and will be anchored.

Calico Rock Man Is Fatally Shot.. - Calico Rock, Ark. (AP) - Mason Dillard, aged 35, formerly residing on the outskirts of town, was shot and killed instantly here tonight by Bill Carden, aged 30, a WW Veteran and night engineer at the Calico Rock Light Company Plant. Many residents gathered on the streets following the shooting, which occurred on the Main Street before four witnesses. Carden was held following a hearing before Mayor W.J. Copp.Dillard is survived by his wife, while Carden has a wife and two children. Carden came here about a year ago.. (this was a long article)

Youth Is Shocked Fatally at Rogers, Ark. - R.C. Wyatt, 13 year old son of Amos Wyatt, farmer living near Calico Rock, died last night as the results of burns received from a 38,000 volt line of the Southwestern Gas & Electric Company. The boy died about two hours after he had been knocked from the top of a 60 foot power line pole; where he climbed on a "dare" from several playmates. He has passed one cross bar and started toward the top of the pole amid the shouts of his companions when there was a sudden flare and his body was hurled onto the wires below, a short distance from the ground. He never regained consciousness. Wyatt had been visiting his grandparents at Rogers. His parents were notified of the accident and left Calico Rock last night.

Calico Rock, Sept. 10 - Miss Eva Woods, aged 22, daughter of John Woods, eight miles north of Calico Rock, killed herself Thursday night at the home of a neighbor by drinking cattle dip. The neighbor, Mrs. J.E. Berkebile and Miss Woods had attended a dance and had retired about midnight. Mrs. Berkebile said she was awakened by the girl's groans. She said the younger woman kissed her goodbye after saying she had drank the poison.

Two Arrested Here (From Monday's Daily) - Porter Hodge and John L. Lawrence were arrested today by Deputy Sheriff Oscar Rogers and city policemen Rufus Adair and Bruce Wilcox, and held for Izard County officials. Sheriff J.A. Harris of Melbourne arrived here this afternoon and returned the two men to Izard County to face grand larceny charges.

Champion Tobacco Chewer, Aged 107, Also Likes Coffee - Calico Rock - "Uncle Martin" Holland, who lives a few miles north of Calico Rock, probably holds a state, if not a national, record as a tobacco chewer, having begun using tobacco more than 100 years ago. He is now 107. Born in Wolf County, Kentucky in 1826, he has seen some big changes take place in modes of living. During his boyhood days automobiles and airplanes were not yet dreamed of, and ox teams were "all the go." Five years ago he took his first ride in an airplane, and at that time it was thought he was the oldest person ever to go up in a plane. He says he has been drinking coffee at the rate of about a cup a day for more than 100 years. He also drinks milk, and is extremely fond of gravy and cornbread. He also likes fruits and vegetables.

Candidate for Governor Here - Senator J.C. Ashley of Melbourne, candidate for governor, was in Harrison today visiting with friends and meeting voters. Mr. Ashley formerly served as Circuit Judge and Prosecuting Attorney of the 16th Judicial District. He has served eight years as a state senator.
