You made me chuckle. I think our Father's generation born in 1920's or right before (essentially, those that served in WWII) sort of took advantage of anything about cars. I do remember Dad redoing one of the cane bottom chairs at Grandma Peck's with the same thing, the inner tube from a tire. Of course it paled to the beauty of the bark woven ones but it wore just as well and if it was in the kitchen or out on the porch, it got a lot of hard use, because it seemed like that was where everyone stayed. They only relaxed in the living room at night or Sunday afternoon.

We had an old cane bottom rocking chair and the bottom came out and my dad
took an old inner tube cut it  in strips redid that rocking chair so he
could use it out on the porch.
