One of my great-great-grandfathers was LeRoy William McWHERTER, b. 1832, Henry or Weakley County, Tennessee, married Caroline TODD, who died in Weakley County about six months after birth of my great-grandmother Lydia Ann Belle McWHERTER, who became wife of John Almus RIDGWAY. Caroline's death (month and year) in 1850 Mortality Schedule for Weakley County.
William LeRoy remarried Coley BUCKLEY and they lived in Marion County, Arkansas in 1860 [Lydia Ann Belle, age 10, in household, age 10]. The boundary changed in 1870s and location was about or near Lead Hill, Boone County, Arkansas. William LeRoy enlisted in CSA from Arkansas. For decades, all I could find on him was "Died on West Bank of Mississippi River" -- and wasn't even sure he was CW Veteran.
Then, finally, with picture of CSA marker on findagrave, I have date of death. I believe he had already been "mustered out" when he died; maybe was on his way home.
Would someone have any information about William LeRoy McWHERTER. His ancestor -- spelled McWHORTER -- was RW Patriot, along with siblings. I have good records on his ancestry. His parents were James McWHERTER and Mary CLAYTON. Don't know when and why they started using "e" and "i" instead of "o" -- former governor of Tennessee Ned McWHERTER is one of ours.
Did his widow receive pension? She is even related to me through a RIDGWAY and BUCKLEY marriage. They had two sons: Thomas Porter McWHERTER (died in CA) and Charles McWHERTER.
Would love to learn circumstances of his death and any further information. Thank you.
Peggy
