William Green was the type of man who always thought the grass was greener . . . . They moved around frequently. So much so, that Mabel used to say that as soon as she got the curtains up, they would be on the move again. After their son Calbert was born in 1900, in Salem, Arkansas, they moved to Elmira, Washington where William Lowell was born in 1903. They moved to Millet, Alberta, Canada. After living there for some years, they sold their land for $2000.00 and moved to Coronation, Alberta, Canada. They had heard about homesteads available there. He applied for land on June 16, 1910. The first year they had 15 head of cattle, 14 horses and 10 hogs. In 1911 they had 18 head of cattle, 18 horses and 10 hogs. 1912, 20 head of cattle, 20 horses and 20 hogs, and 1913 they had 34 head of cattle, 24 horses and 20 hogs.
The Montgomerys had two houses 12x14 and 14x16 made of lumber, estimated value $500.00. Their barn, $300.00, grannery, $75.00 and hog house, $40.00. The well was valued at $80.00. Wheat was their main crop, and in 1907, a new breed of early-maturing wheat, Marquis, was developed to replace the later-maturing Red Fife. Drought, frosts and pests frequently caused crop failures, lowering grain prices. In those years the animal population tended to rise. Mosquitos were also a problem, and everyone ware netting over their heads for protection. Smoke smudges were made for the animals.
The first school the Montgomery children attended was in Sounding Creek. Later, the Broughton School was built, and that is when the Fairbairns met the Montgomery's. Percy Fairburn was smitten with Zella. Some years passed and William and Mabel decided to move to California, partly because in 1915, Canada was at war, and Calvert was old enough to be drafted. The United States did not enter the war until 1917. The other reason they moved was to get Zella away from Percy. William Green did not like him. He did not like Englishmen and Southerners, and apparently Percy fit both catagories. However, Percy was from Ottawa, Ontario and his ancestors came from Scotland.
They lived in California until 1916. Then they heard that Percy was coming to California so they moved back to Coronation. In 1917, William and Mabel to Baker City, Nevada and bought land owned by a Spanish Company. They were the only white folks in town. They grew alfalfa and the boys and William worked putting up hay. When a saloon opened in town and a man was shot, Mabel had enough. Her sons were soon to be of drinking age. They sold their hay land for $6000.00.
Beaver City, Utah was their next home before moving back to Alberta and settling in Camrose, Alberta in 1918. Euell was three years old. Zella went for a four month long teacher's training course at the Camrose Normal School, but she didn't like teaching, so she never really taught school,
William Green and his family moved to Rutland, British Columbia in 1920 and purchased an orchard. In 1927, William and Mabel traded their orchard in Rutland for land in the Peace River country at Bluesky, Alberta, Canada. And why did they move there? The literature stated that the Peace River Country was one of the last frontiers of the great west. Everyone seemed to be talking about it. It was described as beautiful beyond words, with surrounding hills, the trees with their autumn-hued leaves of orange and gold; all reflected in the mighty Peace River. It was said to be a fabulous empire of wood, water, rich soil, game, fish, ample rainfall and magnificent scenery. It was forecast that in a few years millions of people would be living there. The Peace River country called to William and he packed up his family and moved. No one told him that it was going to be many miles beyond the railroad and it lacked roads, schools, churches and markets.
There is much more to this story, and I would suggest that anyone interested to please contact Margaret Heuppelsheuser at or at her mailing address:
