In my family it meant that you either didn't know, or want to figure the
"removes".

If you believe some "experts" no one can be further than a forty-second
cousin to everyone else on earth. Some silliness about the total of one
persons ancestors would equal more in just a few generations than the
total number of people that have ever lived.
