I dug a little pond one year, 4x8x4. A friend gave me a couple of koi, then I went to a bait shop here in town, and they actually had what they call "pink" minnows. I bought two dozen of them, to keep the mosquito population down. Much cheaper than walmart's goldfish, and they bred for years. Funny thing, much like the koi, each little fish had it's own markings. Some had white on them, some had black, and no two were alike. I liked the little fish better than the koi.
I had city water, so kept buckets filled for 24 hours before adding it to the pond, when needed. The chemicals dissipate enough not to bother the fish. Course my little hole in the ground isn't as big as a horse trough.
I had plants in it, too. I bought some oxygenators at the pet shop, and then was given a couple of water lillies and water irises.
I enjoyed that little pond,

Fish won't freeze in water at least 2 feet deep, but have to keep the ice broke up, or have those oxygen plants, at least that's what the pond people told me.
