Aug 14, 1958 – Former Police Judge Is Dead

Judge O. P. Estes, 70-year-old colorful former Oklahoma City police judge, died early Tuesday in Mercy Hospital. He had been ill about 10 days.

Judge Estes, who lived at 141 NE 26 was born Feb 2, 1888 in Newburg, Ark. He came to Oklahoma City in 1916.

He became police judge in the early 1920’s and was soon known by many attorneys as a man who was quick to administer justice.

Along with his quick decisions came witty advice. He had been known to tell many a wife beater, “All right. I’ll let you go home, but the next time I hear of you beating your wife, I’m going to take an afternoon off and go out and whip you myself.”

Although he had threatened any number of wife beaters, his off was never taken up.

Judge Estes retired in 1931, in favor of the present Oklahoma City Police Judge Mike Foster.

He was a member of the Church of Christ, Knight’s of Pythias, Elks club and was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shiner.

Survivors include his wife, Frances, of the home; two sons, Bill Estes, with the U. S. Air Force station in England and Charles Estes, 2040 NE 29; nine grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs Dollie Gifford, Austin, Texas; Mrs Joe Cooper, Marked Tree, Ark.; Mrs Paul Harmon, Newburg, Ark., and Mrs F. E. Clark, 3245 NW 21 and three brothers, J. A. Estes, Dallas, Texas and O. Z. and Albert Estes, both of Calico Rock, Ark. -------- (Oklahoma City Times)
