Jim, maybe you can get better handle on my KINGs by finding William KING and Elizabeth "Betty" HULSEY in your file. They are my great-grandparents and father of Robert Polk KING. I used to post so much, that I thought people got bored with me.

Veda KING s/b Vada Lee KING, who married Thomas Jackson FINLEY, daughter of Robert Polk KING and Lavinia Agee {RIDGWAY} KING.

Robert Polk KING came to Baxter County about 1875 with his widowed mother, Elizabeth KING. She was widow of William KING. Perhaps you'll recall that William KING and sons James Caleb, Alfred, and William Rufus left Northwest Alabama in 1865 to join Union forces at or near Nashville, Tennessee. The father, William, died of Bright's disease (kidney) in Tennessee. Alfred died during his Union service. James Caleb returned to Alabama and never migrated to Arkansas. William Rufus came to Marion County, AR (found in 1870C) and married Sarah Ellen COCKRUM. They both died between 1900 and are buried at Burnt Schoolhouse Cemetery, Lone Rock, Baxter County.

William KING and sons were part of "The Southern Loyalists." In 2002, I printed an online article of this title, written by Robert E. HURST.

Our KING family was closely connected to the William R. HURST family of Colbert / Franklin Counties, Alabama. Even those HURSTs remaining in Alabama attend KING funerals there. I've posted many times that some descendants of WRH approached us during visits to Baxter County and told us they knew Nancy Catherine KING's children (dau of Wm. KING) were his children.

As we understand, the father of William KING was Meredith ("Meriday" KING) and was said he was full-blood Irishman. Meredith KING's wife Catherine unknown. Ours migrated from Georgia to Alabama (Natchez Trace) in early 1800s. They lived at Newburg (near Tuscumbia, Helen KELLER's home). I'll read your message again to see if I can find any connection. I have two books on KINGs from Alabama. One covers relationship with William Devaney KING, vice-president under Franklin PIERCE (Barbara BUSH's ancestor, isn't he?). There were some DEVANE / DEVANEYs in the Colbert / Franklin area -- and some were in Baxter census. I believe one of William R. HURST's wives was a DEVANEY. But can't find any DEVANEY connection to my KINGs.

Take care, Jim. Often think of your son. Is he still in Iraq? Let us hear about him. That's what is great about the Izard List -- we're all family.

Peggy {KING} Truesdell
