Rick, thank you.
The reason I asked is this Lewis Green we keep hunting.
He disappeared after the 1860 census. This would make his age into the 60s.
I thought maybe if he died a natural death he might be buried locally in a
military area.
And, he possibly was in the Civil War?? I found 2 Lewis Greens at that site
that shows all the national cemetery burials. Both died in 1864, one buried
in Illinois, the other in GA. If he was in MO, when and if he joined or was
forced to sign up, he could have died in a confederate or Union prison. So,
I guess the next thing to do is find out the info about these two?
I think I might have found another great grandfather from Illinois who was
killed and placed in a mass grave in Indiana. Then, at some point he was
re-buried in an area for Union soldiers and not mixed with Confederates as
well.
So, I will investigate these individuals. Best way to do that is to follow
instructions at that website? If I call the cemetery, do they know ANY
information there?

Pat,

There are National Cemeteries at Ft. Gibson, OK, and Ft. Sill, OK. On the
Oklahoma/Arkansas border there is one in Fayetteville, AR and Ft. Smith, AR.

Okay, an 1860 era death....there really wasn't a national cemetery in that
time frame. The first TRUE US National Cemetery as best as I can remember
was at Arlington. It was built on the site of Robert E. Lee's
home/plantation. That spot was chosen, so the story goes, so that every
morning when Lee looked out of his house, he would see the markers of all
those Civil War KIA's who were buried there. That was after the war ended
in 1865.

There is the possibility that a veteran who lived close to a military
installation could have been buried at that post/fort. The only thing
needed was permission of the post/fort commander at the time. The cemetery
at Ft. Gibson was originally the fort's cemetery I do believe, the same with
Ft. Sill. Many Indians, to include Geronimo, are buried in the Ft. Sill
cemetery but again, if I remember correctly, in a separate area. I've been
to the grave site but cannot rememebr who far it was from the US veterans
burial area. Most veterans though who died in the post-Civil War era were
buried in private or community cemeteries and there is no official US record
of their burial locations.

A side note for you...all veterans who served honorably in the American
military, rate a free headstone, even Johnny Reb Confederates. I obtained
one a few years ago for my great, great grandfather, William Martin Lawrence
and placed it at his gravesite. So, if you have a relative who served
honorably who needs a headstone, you can get it! Contact your "favorite" or
local funeral home. They have the paperwork there to send in for you (they
have to send it in) along with proof of honorable service and in about 3
months they will get the headstone in for you. All that is free. BUT...if
you want it placed, you will have to pay to have that done. The cost is
usually anywhere from about $50.00 to $150.00 for it to be set in concrete
depending on the cemetery. Some cemeteries require granite bases which are
considerably more expensive but most will accept the concrete setting. And
if it's a country cemetery, you can do it yourself if you wish. Bear in
mind though, these headstones are heavy!

Anyone: If a local military veteran dies--where is the nearest National
Cemetery they might be buried in? What if they died 1860+?
Thanks, Pat, in Oklahoma
