MELBOURNE — Eugene Owens, 84, of Calico Rock died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home. A service was 2 p.m. May 6 at Howard Funeral Home Chapel in Calico Rock, with Bro. Gail Wooten officiating. Visitation was 6-8 p.m. May 5 at Howard Funeral Home Chapel.

He was born Thursday, May 17, 1923, in Calico Rock to James and Augusta Vernatter Owens. He was much loved by his wife of 61 years, his children and grandchildren. As a young man, Mr. Owens was an auto mechanic, then owner and operator of a sawmill. In his later years, he worked with cattle. He enjoyed the outdoors and especially liked to hunt and fish.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Gloria Owens of Dolph and Jimmy and Thelma Owens and Johnny and Lynne Owens, all of Calico Rock; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda Bell of Calico Rock and Loretta and Dennis Ducker of North Little Rock; one sister, Helen Fitzhugh of DeSoto, Kan.; 13 grandchildren, Lynna Stanley, Brandon Stanley, Lesa Neil, Shane Owens, Travis Owens, Dywain Bell, Jeana Dickerson, Gregory Ducker, Sara Sherrod, Rachel Loretz, Jeremy Owens, Jessica Owens and Jason Owens; 24 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Colleen Jennings Owens; one son, Joseph Wayne Owens; two daughters, Brenda Haney and Roselle Stanley; two grandchildren, Joseph Wayne Owens and Shannon Stanley Grady; one great-grandchild, Jaben Grady; three brothers, Henry Owens, Japeth Owens and Uyless Owens; five sisters, Mary Griggs, Fairy Smithson, Leona Lively, Maxine Lively and Lorene Blankenship; and two sons-in-law, Carl Haney and Keith Bell.

Interment followed the service at Roselawn Cemetery in Calico Rock under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Melbourne. Pallbearers were Brandon Stanley, Shane Owens, Travis Owens, Dywain Bell, Gregory Ducker, Jeremy Owens and Jason Owens.
