Sep 8, 1955 – Cave-In Near Mt. Pleasant Kills Miner

A 48 year-old miner was killed instantly Thursday morning of last week in a mine cave-in near Mount Pleasant just across the Independence line.

The victim was Elisha Caraway, who lived just off Highway 69 south of Mt. Pleasant.

Mr Caraway, who was employed by Troy and Noel McMahan is a manganese recovery operation, was digging into a bank of the ore when some rock and earth from overhead caved in on him, witnesses reported.

He was struck by a solid mass about “the size of a barrel” and died instantly. He was covered by dirt and rock from the chest down, witnesses said.

Mr Caraway was working with two brothers, Floyd and Earl Caraway of Mount Pleasant and two nephews, Don and Vaughn Caraway, when the accident occurred about 10:30. Floyd Caraway also was hit by the cave-in but was not hurt.

Mr Caraway is survived by his wife, Mrs Ida Caraway: two other brothers, Will of Cushman and Lonnie of Batesville; two sisters, Mrs Myrtle Anderson of Bethesda and Mrs Pearl Garland of Michigan and his mother, Mrs Dora Caraway of Mount Pleasant.

The funeral was held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. George Roberts officiating.

Mr Caraway’s death marked the second mining fatality in the Mt. Pleasant community this year. Amil W. Garner 43 was killed Jan 7 a short distance from the spot where Mr Caraway died when a hillside caved in on him.

In another mining fatality the latter part of June, Lyle Cartwright 47 of the Batesville area was killed near Cushman when the manganese core driller boom he was operating struck and electric power line near Cushman. ---- (Batesville Guard)
