TO: Members of the Izard County Historical and Genealogical Society

The Summer History Program will be

THE CIVIL WAR IN IZARD COUNTY

Speaker: William "Bud" Cooper

Sunday, July 15

2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

3:00 Business meeting

Melbourne City Hall

To reach Melbourne City Hall, go west on Highway 9 from the three-way intersection by Tate Lawrence Chevrolet. Drive one and a half blocks to the City Hall/Visitors Bureau sign. Turn left onto Municipal Drive back to the City Hall Building.

Cooper will discuss how the war affected Izard County and Northeastern Arkansas. Though there were no major battles here, jayhawkers and bushwhackers robbed and often burned farms and businesses. Anyone who resisted was killed.

Several Confederate Infantry companies were recruited from the county. Mount Olive, Sylamore Bottoms, Lunenburg and Strawberry Creek were the scene of battles and skirmishes. Other details of his talk include the Mill Creek Peace Society, manufacture of gunpowder near Sylamore Creek and a silver mine at Mount Olive.
