I have a great aunt whose givin name is Ethel Louise Sexton. I always new her as Helen and she is listed as Helen in the census records. The story behind the name discrepency is this. The baby arrivied and was named Ethel Louise and after she was born a letter was received from one of the grandmother's asking that the baby be named Helen. So the census information has her listed as Helen. I was in my early twenties before I knew that her name was Ethel Louise and I spent time with this great Aunt every time I went to see my grandmother. There is sometimes a logical and even a good story behind the census discrepency if you ask someone before it is too late.

Just remember there's no tell who gave the information and maybe they hadn't
quite decided on her name yet.
If grannie was there and gave the name she might have wanted it to be Mary
and she gave the info. One of my families all the children's names were
wrong in the 1870 census. I think the census taker must have gotten the
names from the family down the hill because he was to lazy to climb up. The
boys in this family were named after presidents but the names given were for
the wrong presidents and the girls names were all wrong.
In the case of Laura / Mary I think it was the same person just that the
census taker screwed up.
Have a good day! Gotta get to cleaning this nasty house.
