Calico Rock Progress - Jan 29, 1954 - George Wm. Speak Dies at Age of 81
George William Speak aged 81 well known citizen of this vicinity died Tuesday night. He had been ill for several days.
A native of Missouri, he moved to this county as a child. The greater part of his life was spent near Melbourne and in the vicinity of Gorby. On March 24, 1898 he was married to Lon Anna Gillihan, and to this union eight children were born. His wife and three children preceded him in death. He was converted in 1897 and united with the Methodist Church and later joined the Baptist Church at Belvue, where he was ordained to the ministry in 1901. At his death he was a very active and highly esteemed member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs Austin Conrad of Gorby and Mrs John Simpson of Kennewick, Wash.; three sons, Johnnie of Moxee City, Wash., Frank of California and Marvin of Calico Rock; one brother Jesse Speak of Calico Rock; one sister Mrs Jane Mason of Calico Rock; a half-sister, Mrs Elvie Willard of West Plains, Mo., and a half-brother, Fizer Speak of Calico Rock; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, at Palestine Church near Gorby by Rev. B. N. Hall. Burial was in Palestine Cemetery, the Hall Funeral Service being in charge of arrangements.
