Hi Don and Vera

You know, I have one ancestor that I know married very young. Her name was
Maude Smith - my grandfather's sister.

Maude married Perry Tipton when she was just thirteen years of age. When I
saw the marriage; I just about died.............thinking what I was doing at
thirteen?

Cheerleading? Football games? You get the picture?

Then, I started thinking back what little that my mother had said about
Maude and recalled a dark, family secret.

Seems that the Smith father; Thomas J. was molesting his two daughters. I
know that I have not dreamed that folks and isn't it just awful?

Whenever I do research on Thomas J. Smith and the various posts that I have
made regarding the search for him - I at times don't even have the spirit to
look for him at times. But, I do and will continue to try to find him.

I think many times that poverty seems to play a big part in girls marrying
so young. My records show that Tom Smith is missing from the family in
1910. In 1900 they were back in Baxter Co., after having spent a stint of
criminal activity in Indian Territory with liquor violations.

But, in 1910 Nancy Sinor Smith and some of the children are living in Stone
Co. and "working out" and Tom is nowhere in site.

"Working out" equals poverty, I think folks.

But, I suppose that when I research these unknown souls that are related to
me by blood; I do often wonder why they made some of the decisions that they
did in their sometimes short and sad lives.

Maude married Perry as a child and had many children herself. She and Perry
lived together their entire adult lives and I hope it was a happy one. But,
I can tell you folks that the supposed molestion that she endured in her
childhood; at the hands of her father - left it's mark in many ways. She
also lost three of her children - or so I have been able to piece together.
One died in a car accident as a teenager and two children didn't live to see
the age of ten, I believe. All sons. I think she and Perry only had one
daughter?

Every picture that I ever saw of Maude Smith Tipton? She was sad. Very sad
looking. To Perry's credit? He always appears to be "devoted."

So, that's another chapter in my Smiths and it is not a happy rememberance;
as you might already can envision.

There's a whole lot of stories out there, folks - with our families and a
great deal of mine are not esteemed, unfortunately..............or at least
when it comes to my Sinors and Smiths.

So, did Maude marry to escape her father and poverty? Probably both.
