> LOOKING BACK COLUMN, Melbourne Times - June 10, 1927
> On Saturday morning, June 4, H. W. Ross, a J. P. of Oxford, was
informed that a barrel of mash had been located by some squirrel hunters,
and T. E. Montgomery went for Sheriff Johnson. Johnson having been gone,
Montgomery secured the help of John Rowden, but arrived 15 minutes too late
to help make an arrest.
> A party of five arrived with all the necessities to reduce the
contents of the barrel into moonshine. About the time such vessels were
laid down they were ordered to throw up their hands but they took to the
bushes instead, leaving the contents all with Ross and McVey, who were
joined in a few minutes by Montgomery and Rowden. After having carefully
packed and shouldered everything they started across the jungles for home
and were soon joined by J. Harve Smith, constable of Newhope Township. No
arrests have been made as yet, but probably will be later.
