Somehow my response to Jim's post went off into outer. I apologize if this
is a repeat.

I believe that Nancy, whose maiden name I have seen as CHATMAN, CHAPMAN,
CHIPMAN and SHATTUCK (or maybe SHIPMAN?), was the 2nd or 3rd wife of the
G.W. NEAL you refer to. Consider the following:

1. 1850 census, Rocky Bayou Twp, Izard Co:

George W. Neal; 39, m, farmer; TN

Nancy Neal; 34, f; KY; can't r/w

Manuel Neal; 18, m, TN, att sch

Eliza Jane Neal; 17, f, TN, att sch

Reuben J. Neal; 15, m, TN, att sch

Mary Jane Neal; 12, f, AR, att sch

James P. Neal; 8, m, TN, att sch

Archibald Neal; 10, m, AR

Septa Neal; 8, f, AR, f, AR

Alexander Neal; 7, m, AR

Eli Neal; 1, m, AR


2. 1860 census, Mill Creek Twp, Izard Co:
W. P. Jacobs; 24, m, farmer, RE: $800, PP: $400, Tenn

Mary J. Jacobs; 24, f, Ark

William Jacobs; 2, m, Ark

James A. Jacobs; 2/12, m, Ark

Alex Hightower; 14, m, farm laborer, Ark

Amanda Neal; 6, f, Ark


3. My grandmother, Carrie JACOBS ADAMS, referred to her grandmother as
"Mary NEAL," but William P. JACOBS' Civil War pension file says her name
was "Mary Jane HIGHTOWER."

4. The presence of a NEAL and a HIGHTOWER in W.P. JACOBS' household in the
1860 census would seem to confirm that Mary J. JACOBS was the same Mary J.
that was in G.W. NEAL's household in 1850. I believe that her mother,
Nancy, was married to a HIGHTOWER about 1831 and married NEAL abt
1848. All the children in the 1850 census born in AR are probably
HIGHTOWERs, except Eli. The older children are probably G.W.'s by his
first wife.

This is speculation based on circumstantial evidence and a lot of
back-and-forth with other researchers. I'd be glad to hear any other
thoughts on this family. Also, any ideas about Nancy's ancestry and who
her 1st husband was.
