Don't overlook Martha in the 1870 either. I expect Samuel was married
before (there is a pretty good age difference between he and Malinda) and
that both Lewis and Martha are half-sibs of Thomas. I wouldn't be surprised
if there were others.
Mercer County is right on the Iowa line so the pattern is heading south.
And yes, there was a lot of mining going on in Marion County in those days.
I have spent a little time looking for Sam in 1860, but no luck so far.
