Sep 20, 1929 - Young Man Drowned in River Near Sylamore
Carl Partee loses Life trying to Swim White River
Carl Partee, 18 years of age, son of Mr and Mrs Mace Partee, who live
on the Harris Bottoms farm, two miles north of Sylamore , in Stone County,
lost his life last Sunday about noon, in an attempt to swim White Rive at
the Arnold Ferry, one mile up the river from Sylamore.
The body was not recovered until Tuesday morning about eight o'clock,
being found near the head of Buck Island, 5 miles below Sylamore. Though the
drowning occurred on the Stone County side of the river, the body was found
near the Izard County bank.
Young Partee and four other young men had crossed the river at the
ferry earlier in the day, and drove out on the Sylamore-Melbourne highway.
ON their return they found the ferry boat on the Stone County side. Partee
and young Lee Jeffery decided to swim over after the boat. When within only
a few feet of the boat the Partee boy sank and reappeared twice before it
was realized by the others that he was in distress. Before he could be
reached he disappeared again and filed to come up. Walter Hayden was some
distance away, coming toward the ferry and saw the boys swimming and hearing
the boys on the bank hollowing to Partee to "go on, go on"
He sensed danger and rushed to the scene, but could not get there in
time to save the youth. A searching party was quickly organized to hunt for
the body.
The victim is a nephew of S. J. Partee of Calico Rock.
