Have you taken a look at the reprint of William Monks' memoirs? It came out
in September 2003. I've only skimmed through it, but it seems an
interesting read.

It's entitled A History of Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas: Being an
Account of the Early Settlements, the Civil War, the Ku-Klux, and Times of
Peace (The Civil War in the West).
