Beth,

Apparently that was his regular employment. He was difficult to identify
because of his condition from being in the water so long. All his
identification had been removed and the book reads, "Next he (the sheriff)
examined the hands of the dead man. They evidently had not known hard labor,
for they showed no signs of callous."

Don't know about others drowning there.
