My father raised cotton here in S E Mo and I remember when some of his
cousins
from N Ar would come over and stay with us in the fall and pick cotton.
Usually
started picking in early fall and finished up in Nov. The pickers hand
picked it
and then after they had gotten it picked, they did what they called "pulled".
Instead of pulling the cotton out of the boll, they would pull the whole boll
off
and the cotton gins would seperate the cotton from the boll when it went thro
the machines at the gins. We have one of the old cotton sacks that we put
the cotton in when we picked. Schools here in S E Mo would have what they
called "cotton vacation" for six weeks every year since so many students had
to help in the cotton harvest, and used what we were paid to pick the cotton
to buy our school clothes. I told one of my grandsons this story and he was
shocked, remarked he was sure glad he didn't have to pick cotton to get his
school clothes. My senior class even "pulled bolls" for a day to help
finance
our senior class trip. We didn't mind, in fact, we just made a fun day out
of
it.
I'm glad we could all get jobs when we got out of school so we didn't have to
do that anymore as it was hard work. It gave us all good work ethics and
myself, my siblings and my classmates all have had successful lives so it
didn't leave any "scars"<g>
