Harold

I really didn't know that the Reeves was even remotely close to Guion,
really. You say it is on the Guion Road? I had checked with LaMyra in the
past - her mother lives in Guion or did at least at one time - to see if my
mother's little brother; Charles Ray Smith was buried in one of the
cemeteries within the city limits or thereof. No listing of a marked grave
of a Smith, other than a Thomas Smith and daughter buried at the
Guion-Campbell. And I have not eliminated the fact that this could be my
Tom Smith, by the way...........but, not sure who the daughter would be
unless that 1900 census that you all were helping me with was a daughter
instead of a son that the line had been drawn through on the enumeration.
Do you recall that one? You checked the online image out for me?

Anyway.

My aunt as I mentioned before had just said that little Charles was "buried
up near Guion." The Smiths were like the folks in 'The Painted House,' I
believe and just traveled around where they could find field work. The
other child; little Virginia Effie was buried at the old Lane Cemetery in
Walnut Ridge in 1930; having perished on her birthday. Poor little soul. I
will never forget my asking my mother; Lena why she died and Mother said
that she ate a raw turnip, became ill and was dead by nightfall.

Now..........what in the world does that mean? Eating a raw vegetable
killed a five year old child? Any nurses on board that could translate that
ancient malady? Would it translate to what in modern diagnosis?

Can't remember what it is called now, but the published obituary that I
found in my grandmother's trunk of her deceased daughter's, refers to
Virginia's burial place as being at the Lane Cemetery. Took me months to
find out what county it was in and I was hindered by it not being called the
Lane any longer. I want to say that it is called Memorial Park Cemetery or
something similar - but, do believe that it is in Walnut Ridge. A couple of
years ago a volunteer found her there for me, although her grave is unmarked
and her name is not on the online lists for that county. She was recorded
in the Arkansas Death Index..........Vera found that.

But, as of yet - no trace of little Charles.

Anyway, both graves I am sure are unmarked and I was going to mark them in
the Spring at the same time that I was in Arkansas. But, need to find
little Charles first. My guess is that he died circa 1925-1930.

So, when I saw that reference in the Harvell obituary that Vera posted of
the Reeves being in Guion - my heart just jumped and thought there was the
possibility that Charles was there.

I am really at a loss. Any ideas? What area newspaper would have reported
a death near Guion in those years, Harold?
