Jim,
Yes, Jasper M. Bates + Mary A. Odle are the parents of Martha Elizabeth
Bates (aka Mattie). John N. Bates is the brother of Jasper. Their father is
John A. Bates. All three are in an 1850 TN census in the 5th and 6th Civil
Districts of Coffee County.
John's father is Samuel Bates, but I have been unable to ascertain which
Samuel. He is one of the mysteries yet to be solved.
I am grateful to Betty McCollum and Glenda Ramsey for the knowledge that I
do have about this part of my family ancestry.
