Hi Sharron
How are you?
Yes m'am.......those are my Smiths, my grandfather's parents. And let me
tell you, if you ever find them anywhere - I will kiss you from miles away!
LOL
Tom Smith was a moonshiner, it seems and Nannie? I suppose that she waited
faithfully between stints in jail? LOL Seriously, the last record of them
I have is in 1900 Barren Creek, there in Baxter Co. It appears from this
census that they had spent some time in Indian Territory and then migrated
back to Baxter Co., where Nannie Sinor was from originally. They are not
however found as applicants of the Dawes Commission.
Sherman Lee Smith was my grandfather.
13 June 1900 Baxter Co., Arkansas census, Barren Creek Township:
SMITH, Thomas head W M Apr 1866 34 M/13 MO TN AR farmer

Louis son W M June 1896 3 S Ind Terr MO AR
Willie son W M June 1898 2 S Ind Terr MO AR
Monroe son W M Feb 1899 1 S AR MO AR
Note: There is a child enumerated in this 1900 census, born between Sherman
and Louis. The census taker wrote the name and information down and then
proceeded to draw a line through the data. It is almost illedgible, but is
listed as a son and being born in Arkansas, in the month of June. It
appears that the given name starts with the letter "N." Obviously, the 6th
child born to Nancy by 1900. Did the child die just as the census was
taken?
My aunt, Audie Mae Smith Orvis........who is the only living survivor of
this family that I KNOW says:
"Aunt Dollie was the oldest, my dad (Sherman) was next, Lewis was next, Aunt
Maudie, Uncle Evertt was next and Joe was the last. My dad had already lost
three brothers; one's name was Lewis, one was Evertt and one was Monroe. My
grandfather, Tom Smith died when my father was thirteen years old. My
father and mother took care of his mother and Joe, and Uncle Everett was
still living at home. My father and mother tried to finish raising Joe.
Joe was six years older than my brother; Archie Cleveland Smith. Joe was
nine years older than me."
Note: Audie makes no mention of William "Bill" in the birth order. Aunt
Audie lives in a nursing facility in Jenks, Oklahoma and at times is clear
on her family - other times not. Audie was my mother's sister. Mother died
in 1990.
I have never found my grandfather's brothers. I have a photograph of
Cherokee Bill and of Joe, but the others are lost to me. This photograph
was taken circa 1950 or shortly before. Thanks to Albert Kirkland of this
List, I was able to find his two sisters; Dollie Smith Rust Brackett and
Maude Smith Tipton in a Sand Springs, Oklahoma cemetery.
If anyone sees a Monroe, Joe, Everett or Bill Smiths that are unattached -
send them my wya, will you?
