I had a gggf who was in Gratiot Street for a while, he was in the 8th Ark.
Cav. and was wounded and captured at Newtonia, MO. He spent 3 months
in the hospital there, where his right leg was amputated because of a wound
below the knee. He was sent to Gratiot Street Prison in March 1865, where
he stayed until he took the amnesty oath and was returned home. He was
known as "Peg-Leg John" the rest of his life.
I have discovered a very informative site about the prison, they are starting
to add prisoner lists to this site, an ongoing process. I did not find my John
McElmurry, but they may add his name later. Here is the URL:
