It's sure not because it is flat land.
Guess what my book called "Arkansas Place Names" has to say about it. :-)
Whether Big Flat go its name from a spring or from surrounding clay land
that was sandy and yellowish, is uncertain. One local tradition holds that
the first postoffice was called Big Yellow Flat, because of the color and
flatness of the area. Another explains the origin as the flatness of a
spring, kinow as Big Flat Spring. (Flat is a part of more than one Arkansas
place name)
