Bernie,
Yes, I would say that Vera found him . After looking it over again , I
remember now that Dorothy B. said that this mother of Samuel's was known as
Amity, but that she has been found on various records as Mary A. , Emaline,
Emily, etc. Guess it just depended on what name she was going by in that
census year as to what got recorded for her, or by whoever gave the
infomation and what they called her.
I've found that a lot of the parents made their home with their children or
some other close relative in their later years, back in that time period, it
was just something that came naturally for them, some even cared for aged
aunts and uncles, not like today when some are so ready to place them in
nursing homes, which if they aren't able or willing to take on the
responsibility of caring for an aged parent, then the parent is probably
better cared for in a facility, provided it is a reputable and caring place,
but still I'm sure there would be " no place like home" or being with family
as they get older. I'm sure most would prefer to feel they were wanted, not
seen as a responsibility. Then some may prefer the facilities to living
with a child simply because they do not want to feel like they are placing a
burden on the child.
I've known some who did not want to go to a nursing home, they would simply
give up and did not live very long after being place there. Then there are
some who wanted to go and enjoyed being there with people their age and
lived many more years. I think it depends on the person and their wishes
and the childs ability to accept and care for an aged parent because they
want them in their home, not because they feel they have to.
I always said with 5 children to take care of her my mother would never be
placed in a nursing home, and she never was, she was independent and wanted
to live by herself in her own home as long as she could, which she did, but
she always said she didn't want to burden her children with taking care of
her. I always felt after all the many years of care she gave to her
children, the least we could do would be to care for her in her final days !
Yes, there were a few women back then who lived a very long life span, I ran
across one recently in something I read who lived to be 125 years of age,
now that for a woman back then would have to be some kind of record,
wouldn't it?
