Jean
This is great!
The H. L. Denton is Hugh L. Denton and he was a sibling to teh Tilford
Denton of the 1895 Letter that I posted. Seems that Carrollton is in
Carroll Co. and not Washington Co. Oddly enough, Tilford died shortly after
the letter was written, BUT is buried in Boone Co.

DENTON, Hugh L. 44 TN
#131
Peggy sent me a short list of Dentons from what was referred to as the
Denton Cemetery. His wife; Mary Sneed was buried there, one son and wife
and what looks like a grandson, also. (See chart below.)
But, I found this Hugh L. in the 1850 census for Carroll Co., but this tells
me that he was there as early as 1840..........which is the time period that
my Denton migrated to Izard Co.
I really think that the two families are connected and migrated together.
Tilford's and my Jonathan's. Cousins though, not siblings.

Now, the Samuel Denton that you sent that was in Marion Co. in 1840? Not
sure. Tilford's uncle; Benjamin Franklin Denton (b1797 and father to the
Rev. William Denton) migrated to Marion Co. in about the mid 1850s, I think.
I find him in Bradley Co., Tennessee in the 1850 census.

However I do not show a Samuel in that line. But, I put him in my
database........like yourself, that is the only way that I can eliminate and
connect these Dentons, in hopes of mine surfacing.
<<Was English Denton "Samuel English" Denton?>>
Yes, this was part of the Marion Co. group of Dentons. Rev. William Denton
(b1822) had a brother named Stephen English (b1834) and he named one of his
sons after his brother.

You'll recall our discussion on the List regarding Eng and Lee Denton and
their involvement in the death of a competitive merchant. They were
acquitted, I believe. I think that they are the two that ran the Denton
Ferry, too.
Did that help? Can you tell that I am on a Denton mission? Three years of
research and have never found my Dentons and it is about time, I think.
