It seems to me that your ancestor was a professional soldier. Many Civil
War veterans went this route following the end of the conflict. They were
hired to aid in rounding up the nomadic northern plains tribes when they
were attempting to escape White encroachment and military occupation.

I am not familiar with Blaine Co. in Oklahoma. Ten to one that Peggy will
be able to help you there. But, there were several forts that held the
northern Indian hostage until their eventual removals to other parts of the
country.......at the turn of the 19th century in present day Oklahoma.

It could very well be that your ancestor was assigned to one of these
territorial forts. I'd go to the Oklahoma Historical site and see if they
have anything on these holding forts.

Peggy? My memory is blank right now. What were the names of some of these
forts? The one where Geronimo was murdered?
