Was India Anna Hays Morris Melton your great-grandma? Your "Mama" is your
Grandma Melton - your India's daughter-in-law? Have I got that straight?

Gosh, what a horrible way for those young women to die!

I thought that it was Henry Hays daughter! AND, seems to me that I
found ANOTHER India/Indianna somewhere....lordy, I wish I could find
it!!! India Anna Hays Morris Melton died in 1930, 10 years after
Nathan Hamby Melton died.

Mom was 14 when she died and she said it was her job to get her a
"snuff brush". She would take a small twig and cross cut the end to
fray it. That is what Grandma used to "dip" her snuff. She was
always very fastidious and concerned whether she had any snuff on her
face.

Mom said that her family had servants so she wasn't used to doing
ANYTHING! Mama Melton did ALL the work and waited on Grandma "Indy"
hand and foot! She wasn't very nice to Mama, my Mom says! She was
VERY hard to get along with! But she loved Mother.

They would ride the horse (side saddle with Mom in front) to Bertie
Morris's house. Bertie was Grandma's child by James Morris. They
had three children but two of them died very young and are buried in
Old Philadelphia Church. No names on the headstones except for the
twin (with Nathan Hamby Melton) named Jessie that died at birth.

Jeffie, the other twin, committed suicide when she was 26. Just a few
weeks later, her best friend, Lockie Forrest, daughter of Washington
T. Forrest and Dixie Hays (Mom called her Aunt Dixie) who had only
been married a short time, committed suicide also. They both chose
the most horrible way to do it....they drank lye! No one in the
family would EVER talk about so we will NEVER know exactly why. Mama
always suspected that she was pregnant.
