I don't know the answer to your FTM question, but I ran into the same
problem. I too was very happy with version 6.0 and had no desire to upgrade.
But someone sent me a gedcom I really wanted to see, and I couldn't open it.
So I upgraded to version 7.5 for $19.95 plus tax. As I figured, the bells
and whistles were no improvement as far as I was concerned, but it did open
the gedcom. And today I get an email announcement from FTM telling me that
version 8.0 is now out.
