Hi ya'll!
On a recently aired episode of 'Home Improvement' the character Wilson
Wilson attributed the phrase "Damned if you do, damned if you don't." to the
Methodist Episcopal preacher, Lorenzo Dow. That piqued my curiosity, so I
ran a query in another mailing list to receive the following reply a fellow
named Lee Daniel Quinn:
The attribution is 100% correct. In 1834 he made this reference as part
diatribe against those preachers who "make the bible clash and contradict
itself by preaching:
You can and you can't --
You shall and you shan't--
You will and you won't-
And you will be damned if you do and damned if you don't."
Don't you love that rhyming?
