Subject: [ARFAULKN] CARTER Family Tree - Part 1
Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2003 05:58:20 -0600

Listed below is Part 1 of three generations of the Thomas Carter Sr. family. Part 2 will follow. This family is well known in early Faulkner County history for establishing a cotton gin on Palarm Creek just north of the present community of Hamlet. I am posting this to the Faulkner County list because the information on this family that is printed in the Faulkner County: It's Land and People history book is not entirely correct. I am Thomas Carter Sr.'s great-great-great grandson through his son William M. Carter, granddaughter Veane Carter Jackson and great-granddaughter Dora Jackson Parsons, who was my grandmother. Hope this is helpful.

Descendants of Thomas Carter

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 CARTER SR. was born Abt. 1801 in North Carolina, and died January 1865 in Conway County, Arkansas. He married JANE C. IRVIN 26 July 1822 in Carter County, Tennessee. She was born Abt. 1803 in North Carolina, and died Aft. 1880 in Faulkner County, Arkansas. Both are buried in Carter Cemetery, near Hamlet, Faulkner County, Arkansas

Thomas and Jane Carter brought their family to Conway County, Arkansas, in 1849, settling in Section 32, Township 6 North, Range 12 West. Soon, Thomas Carter Sr. had erected a cotton gin and grist mill, using the waters of Palarm Creek as the source of power. The family was not recorded on the 1850 census, probably because they lived near the county line of Pulaski and Conway counties and were missed by the census takers. Several members of this family served in the Civil War. Alfred and William served in Company "I", 36th Arkansas Infantry, Confederate. William later joined Company "L", 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, Union, with his brothers George W. and possibly Thomas Jr. Their brother-in-law, William B. Butler, also was in Company "L" of the 3rd Arkansas, as was their nephew William Arnold, who served in Company "K". During 1864, soldiers from the 3rd burned Carter's Gin and the bales of cotton ready for sale. One can only imagine the effect this had on Thomas Carter, since five!
members of his family were part of the 3rd Cavalry.

Conway County estate records show that Thomas Carter Sr. died in Jan 1865. His son William Carter was named administrator of his estate in Aug 1865 and listed as his heirs his widow, Jane Carter, daughters Elizabeth Arnold and Lavina Butler, and sons Alfred, William, and George. These records also show the devastating effect the Civil War had on the value of Thomas Carter Sr.'s land and business. The 1860 census showed his real estate valued at $2,700 and his personal estate at $1,300. At the time of his death five years later, his entire estate was valued at $692, with the proceeds of the estate sale amounting to only $338.70.

He was born Abt. 1830 in Alabama, and died 26 March 1864 in Quitman, Cleburne County, Arkansas, during a skirmish between Union and Confederate troops.

4. DR. ALFRED2 CARTER (THOMAS1) was born 22 November 1833 in South Carolina, and died 30 August 1908 in Hamlet, Faulkner County, Arkansas. He married MARGARET ALTA RODEN 31 August 1853 in Conway County, Arkansas, daughter of JOSIAH RODEN and NANCY HAWKINS. She was born November 1836 in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, and died 25 September 1900 in Hamlet, Faulkner Co., Arkansas. Both are buried in Carter Cemetery, near Hamlet, Faulkner County, Arkansas.

Notes for ALFRED CARTER:

References to Alfred's birthplace:

On the 1860 census, he gives Georgia as his birthplace.

On the 1870 census, he gives Tennessee as his birthplace.

On the 1880 and 1900 census, he gives South Carolina as his birthplace.

Hypothesis: His parents were in Tennessee in 1822 (when they married), 1825 (when their first child was born), 1829 (when their second child was born) and 1830 (when they appear on the census). They were in Georgia in 1837 (when their fourth child was born) and in 1840 (when their fifth child was born and they appear on the census). It is quite possible that in their move from Tennessee to Georgia, they traveled by way of extreme northwestern South Carolina. Since Alfred's birth occurred in 1833, this being in the middle of the known dates and locations for the family, it is possible that he was born in South Carolina, while the family was on the move.

A false story has been printed about Alf and Margaret's marriage in the past. It was reported that they met "while on the wagon train and fell in love in Memphis, marrying before they crossed the river." This is most inaccurate. The families did not arrive in this area at the same time and Conway County marriage records document their marriage at least four years after the Carters are known to have arrived.

iii. JOHN W. CARTER, b. May 1860, Conway County, Arkansas; d. Bef. 1870.

iv. MARY CARTER, b. Abt. 1864, Conway County, Arkansas; d. 15 January 1945, Faulkner County, Arkansas; m. JOHN DELIN SIMS, 26 November 1882, Faulkner County, Arkansas; b. Abt. 1862.
