I apologize to Chandra or anyone else that I may insulted by my statement
about section 8 housing and the type of people that it brings in. I do
realize that not everyone who has to resort to section 8 housing are "bad"
people. It just so happens that in my area, in most cases, it does turn out
that way - as I stated, I live just outside of Detroit. I don't know where
you are Chandra, but one mile away from me in Detroit is nothing but Ghetto
now and is the highest area crime rate in Detroit. Since these people have
moved into our city the crime rate has skyrocketed. Properties are
deteriorating very quickly. We had a very neat and tidy neighborhood -
yards were at least kept clean. It doesn't cost money to keep the lawns cut
and weeds pulled. Now, there are many that are very unsightly. There is no
excuse for that. Even for disabled folks or elderly our city has a program
where high school students will come out and keep up their lawns and pull
weeds. We have "gangs" walking down the middle of our street all hours of
the night. Cars flying down with stereos blaring with music with "four
letter words." I have lived in this city for most of the past 33 years.
Went to school in this city from when I was 12 years old even though we
lived in an adjoining city. It sickens me to see what has happened to some
of the homes and the streets in the past two years. I guess you would have
to live it to truly understand. I'm just thankful that all my children are
grown now and do not live in this city anymore. Many residents have removed
their children from the schools too because the violence and drugs have
become so bad here.
By the way, my statement was also based upon the recent statistics given to
me by our police force. Again, sorry to seem as if I stereotyped all who
may have to use Section 8 housing. I should not have done that or at least
explained more clearly that this is the type of people that are moving into
our city and they are the ones that are committing the crimes that have
become rampant here now.
I'd love to move back to the mountains of VA but I could never leave my
children and grandchildren. I know crime exists everywhere but my Dad lives
in southwestern VA and says he would never move back up here. He never
worries about leaving his home even when he makes month long trips up here
to visit us all.

I just got a "new" used car yesterday. The salesman was telling me about
putting an extra key in the magnetic holder and putting it under the car.
But my first thought was if so many people are doing that then wouldn't car
thieves check for them right away? Guess there is no place safe anymore. I
live just northeast of Detroit. When we first moved here 23 years ago I was
never nervous about leaving my house until the past couple of years. The
bad economy and high unemployment rate here as caused many people to lose
their homes. Many of those in my city who were facing foreclosure opted to
rent their homes out until Section 8 - well, we all know the type of people
that brings into a neighborhood. Now crime has risen sharply - break-ins,
car thefts and carjacking. You name it and it's happening all around me now
Recently a young man was carjacked a mile up from me and taken down into
Detroit and shot and killed. Seems police think was all part of a gang
initiation! But you are right - when the economy is bad, crime goes up. I
am home alone all day and keep all doors bolted and will not open the door
to anyone that I don't know. Our city did have a good police force but due
to cutbacks we only have four police officers on street patrol each shift -
not enough. I have to admit that I do get a bit of a special privilege from
them. My grandson's step father is a policeman in my city and he has all
the patrolmen drive down my street as often as they can while on patrol -
makes me feel a bit better but they can't be here all the time.
Just always think one step ahead of the criminals - that's all we can do. I
never put my purse in a shopping cart. It stays with me at all times. One
with a long shoulder strap is best and you can wrap it over you head to the
opposite side so it will be much harder for the snatcher to get it. Women
with small children should be especially careful - they figure they are busy
getting children and groceries in the car and are easier targets - as are
the elderly. In my family none of us women go to any store at night alone.
There's some safety in numbers.
Take care all and be safe.

Since I was having a little tummy problem when hubby went to bed I told
him I was going to keep one of our whistles with me in case I needed him
...Got to thinking how dumb I was for not doing it long ago! Theres now a
whistle in the bathroom..Geez ! Too soon old.... ...Already have one I
confiscated from Buzz by my bed...Have a phone there..Guess I need a
whistle
by my recliner...Well, the phone is there, and the cell...
I fixed up a couple of dog training whistles on lanyards along with a
spare door key. When I go outside I put one on and lock the door behind
me..They stay locked ALL the time...Too many robbers were going in folks
houses while they were outside doing yard work...Hubby keeps his keys in
his pocket. He thought I was paranoid at first but I told him he goes in
and out all the time, how would I know it was him coming in the back door
and not a thief ? He knows I keep a pistol by my recliner when Buzz isn't
here..so
got my point ! Drug use turns robbers into killers....so better not take
a chance....
When we are both gone the door that's 'hidden' is jammed shut and the
other
one is double locked...Those lazy good for nothing devils kick in doors
around here .
.I figure as the economy gets worse robberies will increase...
The latest wrinkle around here is driving through parking lots grabbing
purses out
of carts when women are loading up their groceries....Takes two to do
this , of course..
If they would just set their purse inside the trunk before unloading
groceries.....they'd
forget it was in there and slam the lid, thus locking their keys in the
trunk...Hmnnnn..
Maybe everyone should get a magnetic box , put a spare key in it and
attach it to
the underside of the car in a handy to you spot...Like I have....As I get
older I have to
watch very carefully and try to second guess myself...*grin*

until Section 8 - well, we all know the type of people that brings into a
neighborhood
Wow! That's painting with a broad brush!
I raised my family in a 6 family building on Section 8 when my late husband
became disabled, and had some of the nicest people that I have ever known as
my neighbors. Sure, we had a few bad apples, like the drug dealer that had
customers pulling up a lot. He moved his business elsewhere when we moms
started writing down license plate numbers while sitting out front watching
our kids play.
-------------
I always put my purse in the car as soon as I unlock the door. And I don't
hit the unlock button until I'm ready to go around and get in the other side
of my minivan. I also put the keys in my pocket while transferring bags and
then hold them firmly in hand while going around. They are also in my hand
in jab position before leaving the store or house.
To prevent lockouts, I keep an extra car door key in my purse and in the
house. I have locked my keys in the car a few times, but only locked my
purse in once.
